Understanding High Temperature Heat Shrink Tapes

Radiation Cross-Linked Polyolefin Backing

High-temperature heat shrink tapes use a radiation cross-linked polyolefin backing. The cross-linking process changes the polymer's molecular structure from a linear chain to a three-dimensional network. This structure gives the backing a "thermal memory," allowing it to shrink tightly onto the pipe joint when heated, while offering high resistance to abrasion, soil stress, and mechanical damage.

Shear-Resistant Hot Melt Adhesives

We formulate our copolymer hot melt adhesives for high continuous operating temperatures (up to 85°C and higher). The adhesive bonds with the parent pipeline coatings (like 3LPE, 3LPP, or FBE) and seals the substrate, preventing water ingress, acid/alkali attack, and cathodic disbondment.

Enhanced Cathodic Disbondment Resistance

Corrosion protection systems must resist cathodic disbondment. CYCT's high-temperature heat shrink tapes use a specialized chemical design to maintain adhesive bond integrity under impressed currents and thermal cycling, meeting ISO 21809-3 standards.

Strategic Industrial Advantage

China Factory & Supply Chain Core Competencies

Vertical Production Integration

CYCT controls the complete manufacturing chain. From compounding polyolefin raw materials to radiation cross-linking and adhesive coating, our vertical integration ensures quality control and cost efficiency.

CNAS Accredited Quality Assurance

Our in-house CNAS-accredited laboratory performs real-time performance testing. We test peel strength, lap shear, thermal aging, indentation resistance, and cathodic disbondment to guarantee batch-to-batch consistency.

Economies of Scale & Customized Sizing

We offer custom widths, thicknesses, and roll lengths to fit varied pipe diameters and field environments, reducing scrap waste and onsite installation labor.

Application Engineering

Localized Application Scenarios & Global Compliance

Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD)

Trenchless pipeline installations subject coatings to high shear forces and soil abrasion. CYCT's fiber-reinforced and photo-curing sleeves protect joints against gouging and mechanical wear during pull-back operations.

Our systems prevent coating damage during drilling, helping protect the pipeline in tough geological formations.

Offshore Field Joint Protection

Subsea environments expose structures to high pressure, marine corrosion, and mechanical strain. CYCT supplies systems like the GRF Moisture Curing Shield for offshore structures and polyurethane bend restrictors, protecting subsea assets.

Our materials are designed for offshore environments, providing water tightness and stability under high hydrostatic pressure.

High-Temp Field Joint Systems

High-temperature oil and gas transmission pipelines require reliable external corrosion protection at joint cutbacks. CYCT's PP heat shrink sleeves and solvent-free epoxy primers resist high operational temperatures (up to 85°C/120°C).

These systems bond with FBE and 3LPE/3LPP coatings, providing a continuous barrier against corrosive chemicals.

Market Intelligence

Future Trends in Pipeline Integrity & Heat Shrink Technology

Modern pipeline projects require long-lasting protection with low maintenance costs. Industrial designs are moving toward materials that withstand high operating temperatures, cathodic disbondment, and chemical exposure.

  • 01 / Increased demand for eco-friendly, solvent-free primers.
  • 02 / Use of viscoelastic and self-healing materials for fast repair of structural defects.
  • 03 / Stricter global testing standards (ISO 21809-3 and EN 12068 Class C) for field-applied joint coatings.

Procurement Optimization

Engineering Procurement Construction (EPC) contractors require high-performance materials and responsive logistical support. CYCT meets these needs by coordinating raw material supplies, scheduling production, and verifying products in our CNAS laboratory.

This approach helps ensure high product quality and reliable delivery timelines for large-scale energy projects.

Technical Knowledge Base

Q&A: Pipeline Corrosion Protection & Tape Systems

1. What determines the temperature rating of a heat shrink tape?
The temperature rating depends on the molecular formulation of the backing material and the hot melt adhesive. High-temperature tapes use radiation cross-linked polyolefins that maintain tensile strength at elevated temperatures, combined with shear-resistant copolymer adhesives that resist sliding under thermal stress.
2. What is the role of the liquid epoxy primer in a 3-layer heat shrink sleeve system?
The wet epoxy primer is applied to the sandblasted steel surface to form a chemical bond. This primer acts as an anti-corrosion barrier and prevents cathodic disbondment. The hot-melt copolymer adhesive on the sleeve then bonds with the curing epoxy primer, creating a durable 3-layer protective coating system.
3. How do CYCT viscoelastic tapes differ from traditional heat shrink tapes?
Viscoelastic tapes flow into surface irregularities without requiring pre-heating, maintaining adhesion over time. In contrast, traditional heat shrink tapes rely on heat application to shrink the backing and activate the adhesive, making them suitable for high-stress areas and joint cutbacks.
4. Why is surface preparation critical before installing heat shrinkable materials?
Adhesion depends on mechanical anchoring. Substrates must be prepared to SSPC-SP 10 (Sa 2½) cleanliness, with a profile depth of 50-75 microns. Dust, grease, or oxides can impair the adhesive's bond, leading to moisture ingress and corrosion under the coating.
5. Which testing certifications should global pipeline engineers request?
Engineers should request verification under standards such as ISO 21809-3, EN 12068, and DIN 30672. CYCT products undergo testing in our CNAS-accredited facility to ensure compliance with international specifications for oil, gas, and water infrastructure.
