How does viscoelastic tape compare to heat shrinkable sleeves (HSS)?
Unlike heat shrinkable sleeves, which require surface preheating to high temperatures and rely on hot-melt adhesives, viscoelastic tapes are cold-applied. They require no thermal input, maintain constant liquid-like surface contact, and self-heal if punctured.
What level of surface preparation is required?
Viscoelastic tapes do not require abrasive blast cleaning (Sa 2.5). A wire brush or power tool cleaning to ISO 8501-1 St 2 or St 3 is sufficient. This makes them ideal for field repairs and retrofits where blasting is impractical.
Does the aluminum foil backing prevent cathodic protection (CP) current shielding?
Because viscoelastic materials form a continuous barrier against water ingress, they minimize cathodic disbondment. In buried applications where CP currents are active, we engineer custom systems to align with regional cathodic protection specifications.
