Tubular heat shrinkable sleeves are continuous cylinders that must be slipped onto the pipe before welding the joints. Wrap-around sleeves have an open configuration, allowing them to be wrapped around the pipe at any time, even after welding and testing. They are secured in place with a closure patch before shrinking, offering far greater installation flexibility for retrofits and repairs.
Why is surface preparation so critical before applying wrap-around sleeves?
To achieve high peel strength and prevent cathodic disbondment, the steel surface must be free of rust, moisture, and contaminants. We recommend abrasive blast cleaning to Sa 2.5 grade (ISO 8501-1) with a surface roughness profile of Rz 50 to 100 microns. The steel must also be preheated to the temperature specified in the product datasheet before applying the sleeve.

How do I select the right sleeve width for a field joint?
The sleeve width should cover the bare steel joint and overlap onto the factory-applied pipe coating (like 3LPE) by at least 50 mm (2 inches) on each side. For larger diameter pipes (above DN 500), we recommend increasing the overlap to 75 mm to accommodate any slight movement or shrinkage variations.
