A Heat Shrinkable Sleeve (HTS) works on the principle of elastic memory. A radiation cross-linked high-density polyethylene (HDPE) backing is extruded, crosslinked using an electron beam accelerator, and then stretched under heat. During site installation, heating makes the sleeve shrink back to its original dimensions, wrapping tightly around the pipe girth weld area.

To establish a durable protection layer, a three-layer sleeve system is recommended. The process starts by applying a liquid, solvent-free epoxy primer onto the sandblasted steel surface. The sleeve is then wrapped around the wet primer, and heated with a propane torch. The copolymer adhesive melts, flows into the steel micro-cavities, and chemically crosslinks with the epoxy primer. This structure combines the high chemical resistance of epoxy with the physical toughness of polyethylene, offering superior performance compared to single-layer alternatives.
