A reliable pipeline protection strategy requires coordination between passive barriers (coatings) and active protection (Cathodic Protection - CP). If a coating fails, the cathodic protection system must be able to protect the exposed metal without causing further damage.

Many traditional coatings suffer from cathodic disbondment. When the CP current reaches a damaged area, it can generate hydrogen gas, which creates high pressure and lifts the surrounding coating. CYCT designs its viscoelastic and heat-shrinkable systems to resist cathodic disbondment. Our formulations prevent moisture and oxygen from reaching the steel surface, keeping the protected area minimal even if the outer barrier is punctured.

Why use viscoelastic coating systems over traditional options?
Viscoelastic polymers remain liquid-like over their lifetime, meaning they can flow into microscopic surface imperfections. Unlike standard PE tapes, they do not require a primer, do not cure over time, and provide self-healing properties. These systems also offer excellent resistance to cathodic disbondment.
How does a fiberglass-reinforced sleeve protect pipelines during Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD)?
HDD installations subject pipelines to significant friction and shear forces as they are pulled through rocky boreholes. A fiberglass-reinforced sleeve acts as a sacrificial mechanical shield. Viscoelastic wraps only require a visual cleaning to St 2 / St 3 standards (removing loose rust and scale). Cold-applied PE tapes require a Sa 2.5 blast profile for optimal adhesion, but can also be applied over wire-brushed surfaces with an appropriate primer.
