Science of Protection

Heat Shrinkable Sleeve (HSS) Technology Roadmap

Modern HSS Heat Shrink Sleeves are far more than simple plastic wraps. They are composite systems comprising a radiation cross-linked, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) backing coated with a specialized, high-shear hot-melt adhesive or viscoelastic mastic layer. During installation, the backing's "elastic memory" triggers recovery when exposed to heat (using a propane torch or induction heater), causing the sleeve to shrink tightly over the pipeline joint. Simultaneously, the adhesive liquefies, filling all surface irregularities and bonding molecularly with the factory-applied coating (such as 3LPE, 3LPP, or FBE).

1. Radiation Cross-Linked Backing

By bombarding the extruded polyethylene sheet with high-energy electron beams, a highly stable, three-dimensional molecular network is formed. This gives the backing outstanding resistance to mechanical abrasion, soil stress, and thermal degradation, preventing sagging and environmental cracking over decades of operation.

2. High-Shear Viscoelastic/Hot-Melt Adhesives

Specially formulated to counter shear stress induced by soil movement and thermal cycling of pipelines. The adhesive maintains excellent flexibility in sub-zero environments while retaining high peel strength and resistance to cathodic disbondment at elevated operating temperatures up to 80°C or higher.

3. Epoxy Primer Integration (3-Layer Systems)

For high-demand pipelines, a liquid epoxy primer is applied to the bare steel before sleeve placement. As the sleeve is heated, the adhesive fuses with the curing epoxy. This creates a highly resistant barrier matching the performance of factory-applied 3LPE coatings, resisting cathodic disbondment and water ingress.

To support extreme environments, CYCT's product line includes FRDP 60C sleeves, high-temperature PE tapes, viscoelastic systems, and heavy-duty fiberglass-reinforced overlays designed to survive trenchless installations.
Global Applications

Localization & Specialized Application Scenarios

CYCT's anti-corrosion products are engineered to perform in diverse geographical, geological, and industrial environments worldwide. Different regions present distinct challenges, prompting the development of customized protection solutions:

01

HDD (Horizontal Directional Drilling) Crossing

Trenchless pipeline installations force the pipe through abrasive rock and soil. Standard HSS sleeves risk tearing during pull-back. CYCT provides specialized photo-curing sleeves and high-strength Epoxy FRP (Fiberglass-Reinforced Plastics) overlays to shield joints from severe abrasion.

02

High-Temperature Desert Environments

In regions like the Middle East, pipelines carry hot crudes, and ambient soil temperatures can exceed 50°C. Standard PE sleeves may soften and slip under high shear. CYCT’s FRDX HT and high-temperature PP outer tapes are rated for operating environments up to 100°C, resisting sliding and thermal aging.

03

Sub-Zero & Permafrost Conditions

Arctic and sub-arctic pipeline routes experience ground freezing and shifting. Field-applied tapes must retain flexibility at -30°C. CYCT’s viscoelastic coating systems and cold-applied PE tapes remain pliable, offering reliable adhesion without cracking under low-temperature bending.

04

Subsea & Offshore Splash Zones

Marine environments combine high salinity, UV exposure, and continuous wave impacts. CYCT provides heavy-duty polyurethane solutions, bend restrictors, and viscoelastic tapes wrapped in aluminum foil to seal splash zones and protect subsea flowlines.

Heat Shrinkable Sleeve Technology: FAQ

Q1: What is the main difference between 2-layer and 3-layer HSS systems?
A 2-layer HSS relies on a mastic or hot-melt adhesive applied directly to the cleaned steel joint. A 3-layer HSS system includes a liquid epoxy primer applied to the steel before placing the hot-melt coated sleeve. The 3-layer system offers higher resistance to cathodic disbondment and water permeation, matching factory-applied 3LPE pipeline coatings.
Q2: Why is the cross-linking index critical for Heat Shrinkable Sleeves?
Cross-linking converts thermoplastic polyethylene into an elastomeric material that will not melt at high temperatures. The cross-linking index determines the sleeve's heat recovery force and abrasion resistance. CYCT controls this using high-precision electron accelerators to ensure the backing performs reliably under soil stresses and during high-temperature operations.
Q3: How do you choose the right sleeve for trenchless pipeline installations (like HDD)?
Trenchless installations subject field joints to intense shear force and abrasion against rock and soil. Standard HSS sleeves can tear or slip during the pull-back process. For these applications, we recommend combining our high-shear heat-shrink sleeves with an outer Epoxy FRP (Fiberglass-Reinforced Plastics) protection layer to shield the joint from mechanical damage.
Q4: What surface preparation is required before installing CYCT HSS?
Surface preparation is vital to ensure long-term bonding. The bare steel joint should be abrasive blasted to a minimum near-white metal finish (ISO 8501-1 Sa 2.5 or SSPC-SP10) with an anchor profile of 50-75 microns. The adjacent factory coating must be beveled and cleaned to remove dirt and grease. Pre-heating the joint to the specified temperature is also necessary before applying the primer and sleeve.
Q5: Can viscoelastic coatings replace traditional heat-shrinkable sleeves?
Viscoelastic systems do not require pre-heating or primers, making them easier to install in cold or damp conditions. They offer self-healing properties for minor punctures. However, they lack the high mechanical resistance and shear strength of cross-linked HDPE backing. As a result, viscoelastic systems are often used for pipeline rehabilitation, flanges, and valves, or wrapped with an outer mechanical tape.
Q6: How does CYCT ensure product performance in high-temperature pipelines?
For pipelines carrying hot fluids (up to 80°C or 100°C), standard polyethylene backing and hot-melt adhesives can degrade and slip under soil stress. CYCT solves this by using polypropylene (PP) backings and high-temperature formulations in products like our PP repair patches and FRDX HT sleeves, ensuring stable shear resistance and minimal cathodic disbondment at elevated temperatures.
