Product Description

Construction
Polypropylene heat shrink field joint coatings enjoy very good compatibility with the plant applied three-layer polypropylene coated linepipe.
Structure:
The PP heat shrinkable sleeve consists of irradiation cross-linked and stretched polypropylene backing and modified high shear strength polypropylene adhesive. It is formed into a pre-cut wrap around sleeve with a separate closure system, and applied on a 2-component solvent-free liquid epoxy primer.

The Backing consists of a cross-linked and stretched polypropylene backing which is designed to partially or fully recover with heat from a torch during application. The backing also provides resistance against mechanical damage and UV resistance during construction and in service.
Features
The modified polypropylene adhesive with perfect adhesion to the epoxy primer, the PP backing and the factory applied 3LPP coatings.

The initial layer consists of a compatible liquid epoxy primer as the primary corrosion protection layer. The liquid epoxy primer is a kind of solvent free epoxy coating and formulated to be compatible with the polypropylene sleeve adhesive.

The 3LPP HSS forms the same three layer structure as the factory-applied 3LPP coating. With excellent resistance to corrosion, the FRDP-PP heat shrinkable sleeve not only meets the requirements of ISO/DIS 21809-3: Petroleum and Natural Gas Industries — External Coatings for Buried or Submerged Pipelines used in Pipeline Transportation Systems — Part 3: Field Joint Coatings, but exceeds it.

The final coating system is suitable for the protection from external corrosion of buried field joints operating at temperatures up to a maximum of 110°C. With excellent anti-corrosion performance and compatibility with the pipeline plant applied three-layer polypropylene coated, weld joint polypropylene Heat Shrink Sleeves (HSS) are suitable for Pipelines that will operate in buried service from ambient temperature to 110°C for a 30 year design life.

Frequently Asked Questions
1 What is a polypropylene heat shrinkable sleeve and how does it work?
A polypropylene heat shrinkable sleeve (PP HSS) is a field joint coating system consisting of an irradiation cross-linked and stretched polypropylene backing combined with a modified high shear strength polypropylene adhesive. When heat is applied during installation, the backing recovers and the adhesive bonds firmly to the pipe surface and epoxy primer, creating a tight, corrosion-resistant seal around the weld joint.
2 What is the maximum operating temperature for the PP heat shrink sleeve?
The polypropylene heat shrink sleeve is designed for pipelines operating from ambient temperature up to a maximum of 110°C. It is suitable for buried service conditions and is engineered for a 30-year design life at these operating temperatures.
3 Which international standards does the 3LPP HSS comply with?
The FRDP-PP heat shrinkable sleeve meets and exceeds the requirements of ISO/DIS 21809-3: Petroleum and Natural Gas Industries — External Coatings for Buried or Submerged Pipelines used in Pipeline Transportation Systems — Part 3: Field Joint Coatings. It is also tested in accordance with ASTM D638, ASTM D2240, ASTM D570, ASTM D257, ASTM D746, ASTM D-149, and GB/T 4507.
4 Is the PP heat shrink sleeve compatible with factory-applied 3LPP pipeline coatings?
Yes. The 3LPP HSS is specifically designed to be fully compatible with plant-applied three-layer polypropylene (3LPP) coated linepipe. The modified polypropylene adhesive provides excellent adhesion to the liquid epoxy primer, the PP backing, and the factory-applied 3LPP coatings, forming the same three-layer structure as the factory coating system.
5 What pipe diameter sizes are available for the FRDP polypropylene heat shrink sleeves?
The FRDP polypropylene heat shrink sleeves are available in 12 standard specifications covering pipe diameters from Φ168 mm up to Φ1220 mm, all with a 500 mm axial length. Custom-made sizes are also available to meet any special customer requirements. For pipes Φ168 to Φ426, the closure patch width is 120 mm; for pipes larger than Φ426, it is 150 mm.
6 What are the key performance results for peel strength and cathodic disbondment?
The installed sleeve demonstrates strong adhesion performance: peeling strength to steel with primer is 9.8 N/mm at 23°C and 2.4 N/mm at 110°C; to coating layer it is 6.4 N/mm at 23°C and 1.4 N/mm at 110°C. After 28-day hot water soaking, peel strength remains at 8.5 N/mm (to steel with primer) and 5.5 N/mm (to coating layer). Cathodic disbondment after 28 days is 7.0 mm at 23°C and 15.0 mm at 95°C, both meeting ISO21809-3 requirements.
